Jackson, MS -- In a recent telephone survey among registered
voters in the City of Clinton, Southern Research Group in Jackson
found a majority of residents polled have strong feelings
surrounding the Clinton Treehouse conflict.
In the 5-minute voter opinion poll, Southern Research Group measured
both personal and political opinions of Clinton residents regarding
the Welch family treehouse issue.
Southern Research Group revealed that 70.0% of respondents are very
aware of the current issues surrounding the treehouse conflict.
41.7% found that the issue was important to them personally. 76.0%
of respondents feel the issue has had a negative impact on the City
of Clinton. 69.9% of respondents hold Mayor Rosemary Aultman and the
Board of Alderman responsible for the negative impact on the City
and 8.3% hold the Welch family responsible.
Overwhelmingly, 76.0% of voters would prefer the City of Clinton to
resolve the issue by granting a special exemption to the Welch
family.
The survey revealed a majority of respondents would be less likely
to support a candidate who has voted against the treehouse in the
past, yet would support those candidates who have changed their
position and are now supportive of the treehouse.
Southern Research Group conducted 350 surveys from September 5-9,
2003 specifically among registered voters over the age of 18 in the
City of Clinton who were aware of the treehouse issue. This sample
size produces a margin of error of +/- 5% at a 95% confidence level
and represents the demographic profile of voters in Clinton,
Mississippi.
