Treehouse Mailbag Favorites
For someone to take time from their busy schedules; to sit down and write a letter to someone they hardly know and for a cause that does not directly impact them; and to place their name on a letter of support; is worth more than any words or thankfulness that we could ever express.

Hello Mr. & Mrs. Welch,
First ...you are in my thoughts and prayers as you,
your family, friends and all those wonderful children
fight to keep your treehouse.
This interests me greatly as a 42 year old "kid"
myself who has a passion for whimsical treehouses and
anything that will help us retain the wonder of
childhood. I am also a documentary film maker with a
small media company.
I would be very interested in attempting to assemble a
documentary film about the treehouse, the people who
want it to stay, the court battle, etc. It would make
a fascinating story and one well worth telling.
Meanwhile...I truly admire the care which you have
taken to build a beautiful safe place for your and
other children to play. Your efforts to fight typical
ridiculous local bureaucracy is greatly admired. Thank
you for standing your ground. All the best and I am
praying hard for you to win.

Take care, look forward
to hearing from you, God Bless Roze

HELLO,
I WORK FOR A COMPANY AND WE HAVE ALL BEEN KEEPING UP WITH WHAT IS GOING ON ABOUT THE TREE HOUSE. WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND THE JUDGE
TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. THIS IS A SAD TIME IN OUR LAND WHEN WE TRY TO HAVE A PLACE FOR OUR CHILDREN  TO PLAY AND NOT GETTING INTO THINGS THEY
SHOULDN'T AND WE HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT. AMERICA HAS TAKEN GOD COMPLETELY OUT
OF THE PICTURE AND THEREFORE PEOPLE WITH NO MORALS AND NO GUTS ARE VOTED
INTO OFFICE. I SURE HOPE YOU ALL DO NOT VOTE FOR THAT MAYOR AGAIN. PRAY FOR
SOMEONE WITH MORALS AND BACKBONE TO RUN FOR OFFICE. SOMEONE WHO WON'T LEAVE
GOD OUT OF THE PICTURE. WE ARE ALL BACKING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY FIGHT. MAY
GOD BLESS YOU THROUGH THIS TIME. I KNOW PRAYER WORKS AND I KNOW GOD IS IN
CONTROL NOT A MAYOR OR NOT A JUDGE. GOD IS IN CONTROL AT ALL TIMES IN OUR
LIVES.
GOD BLESS

Hello,

I'm a New Englander (so forgive me in advance), and I'm not quite up to
speed on your local news. This is the first I've heard about this dispute
over the tree house. I read today that the judge ruled in favor of not
tearing it down. That is terrific news! But I have to say what motivated me
to write this email was not so much the good news, but my astonishment over
the Mayor stating she would appeal the judge's verdict (as stated in the
Clarion-Ledger). From the photos it seems the tree house was constructed by
a talented builder, has been maintained with great care and love, gives
children a wonderful place to play and use their imaginations, and does not
appear to be a safety hazard. As for whether or not it "could" bring down
property values, I would say the tree house "could" be considered a great
feature to prospective home buyers with small children. I wish I had one!!!
From where I sit it seems petty that the mayor would persist in this manner.
Why can't the mayor and the Board just award the permit?

While the article only gave hints of what it is like to live in your
community, I can only surmise it is a lovely place to live and raise a
family - but it could be better with a new mayor and board members!

Good Luck and best wishes,
A New England Mom

Mayor Aultman,

I am writing to express my concerns about the upcoming Treehouse Trial.
(Not that I have any doubts that the treehouse will be allowed to
remain- no human being in their right mind could deny children a
treehouse to play in
, especially one as attractive and safe as the one
in question.)  I just can't believe that a fair and reasonable
community leader could take up against a treehouse.  Everyone loves
treehouses.  I see by your city's website that you are attempting to
promote Clinton Mississippi as a good place for people to move their
families and businesses to.  But banning treehouses seems to me a very
self-defeating method of seeking that goal.  Very few families,
especially those with small children, want to live in a town where
adults are not permitted to construct a fort, a playhouse, or an
innocent treehouse for their children.  My God!  You'd think they had
built a brothel in their front yard the way you've been carrying on
about it.  Not only is a treehouse completely harmless, but a nice
treehouse could actually be used to promote the neighborhood and the
town in which it resides.  Instead of that corny picture of Land's End
catalog models playing leapfrog on the main page of the city's
website, you could have a professional photograph of the kids and their
parents in front of the treehouse.
Just an idea.  My suggestion to
you is to embrace the treehouse as it embodies the good-natured,
fun-loving side of the community and gives the neighborhood children a
chance to play and learn and dream and grow during the most important
years of their lives.  It seems you were wrong, Mayor Aultman, when
you said about building and playing in playhouses that "today's
children would find this extremely boring."  These children are the
future of your city.  If you take away their playground, they will
find another one.  And the new one might not be so benign.  I've been
following this story for some time now, and I think it is one of the
top ten most ridiculous things I have ever seen.
  For the government
of a growing municipality to nitpick over a CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND is
completely backwards and asinine.  Don't you think there are more
important issues affecting your town that might be more worth the time
and money to improve?  You are creating a really poor image for the
town.  I live in Orlando, Florida and I've never even been to
Mississippi, and I'm not the only person from outside Clinton who has
heard about this scandal and gotten an instant bad taste in her mouth
because of it.  It is politicians like you, on a local and global level,
that make it so difficult to enjoy life.
And you do this all in the
name of progress.  Of what use is progress if we cannot enjoy it in
whatever harmless way ! we choose?  And how, indeed, can we say we are
"progressing" if we do not nurture the needs of our children, the true
foundation of any progress that we may hope to achieve, during their
formative and most impressionable years?  What kind of example are you
setting for these children?  Well, Mayor Aultman, enjoy your term in
office.  From what I've read, you seem to have lost political support from
people in Clinton and all over the world- all because of a treehouse.

Sincerely,
Leslie Starr O'Hara
Scott/Mary--

This whole story makes me sick--I can't believe the city is doing this to you--I'm happy to see that you have a lot of local support--your website is awesome.  I'm going to be watching to see what happens--I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

Dear Clinton News,

This morning driving to work (in Springfield, Illinois) I was listening to a radio program and heard of the story surrounding the family treehouse in Clinton, Mississippi.

I am writing to send my SUPPORT.

It was always a childhood dream of mine to have a treehouse.  Unfortunately, we didn't have a suitable tree to put a treehouse in, but my father built a wonderful playhouse, on the ground, that matched the outside decor of my parents house.  (english tudor style)

When I visited the website www.saveourtreehouse.com, it instantly took me back to my childhood and all the wonderful hours spent in our playhouse.

Shame, shame on ANYONE trying to remove this treehouse.  What would be next?  Removing swingsets?  This treehouse is nicely landscaped and blends wonderfully with the main home.

I am spreading the word here in Springfield, Illinois, as I work for the Illinois House of Representatives and suddenly Clinton, Mississippi is looking very questionable.  Please don't sadden the children of Clinton by removing the treehouse.  Aren't there worse problems to be focusing on?

Sincerely,

As one of your Stonegate neighbors, first let me say how disappointed I am at the city council's decision.
Second, I, like the majority of the citizens in Clinton, completely support your position to keep the treehouse.
Take this fight as far as you have to, it's the right thing to do!
Let me know how I can help you in this effort.
Thanks for helping this town, Lord knows we need it!

_____________

Hey there,
My name is ________, I live in Vicksburg, MS, and I was watching the
news on Monday evening, and decided that I needed to speak up.  I am tired
of not doing anything and just sitting back and letting things happen.  It's
time that we stood up for something that is right, especially when it
involves children.  These children are the future, and the city of Clinton
should recognize that!  After all look at the park that the people built
there.  People drive from miles around, (all over Mississippi) to visit that
awesome park!  I was one of them at one time.  It is not  good for the city
of Clinton to let their children down.  This is a time for us a parents, and
Christians for that matter to step up to the plate, and make a difference in
the lives of others.  So I am writing to you all and want you all to know
that you have my vote!
Need any more info on the _____ family, here it is:  ____________________

My family and I heard of the save our tree house on the WYMG radio station the day you were interviewed by them.  We listened carefully and couldn't understand what kind of people wouldn't want a tree house in their neighborhood.  I am an elementary educator and I feel that this was a wonderful addition to your home and neighborhood.  What better way to teach children about imagination, creativity, responsibility, and about community.  Children need to see that there are better ways to spend their days, besides sitting in front of a television watching horrible programs and playing video games and you have done this by placing a tree house for the whole community to have access.  The people who disapprove of your treehouse should spend their time and energy on fighting other issues such as trying to rid television of undesirable programs instead of every childs dream of having a tree house.  And then they need to sit back and enjoy the sounds of laughter and the sites of our future.
With all of our support,
