Legal fees are mounting for the family.  Defending their treehouse has cost $28,000.

The family's legal debt remains over $23,000.  "We never dreamed the city would appeal to the Supreme Court.  After all, the aldermen and city attorney said they would keep the treehouse if found legal.  The Circuit Court's decision made it legal.  To our detriment, we relied on the city's word," state the Welches.

The city's costs are enormous.   WJTV accurately estimated that the city will spend over $30,000 total to fight this treehouse in the courts.   The Mayor refuses to reveal the city's actual legal bill.  The public is outraged and write several letters to the editor urging the city to stop wasting taxpayer's money.

To highlight the staggering degree to which government regulations can harm average Americans, The National Center for Public Policy Research's John P. McGovern, M.D. Center for Environmental and Regulatory Affairs will soon publish its fifth compilation of stories of victims of regulatory and government abuse featuring the Treehouse as its Signature case. The publication highlights how regulations that are poorly written and/or inflexibly enforced can overwhelm, intimidate, bankrupt or otherwise harm average Americans.

The city is spending at a rate exceeding $2300 per month for this issue alone.  The city attorney is paid on average $17,000 per month.  Contrary to popular belief, the city attorney is not paid a fixed salary.  If he does not work, he does not get paid.  The Mayor and Board should work to reduce litigation to save the taxpayer's money.
